I filled out my absentee ballot last night and noticed that, according to instruction #4, it said, "Sign affidavit on back of "Official Election Ballot Envelope. Failure to sign the affidavit will result in your ballot not being counted." This means you have to sign the OUTSIDE of an envelope that has your name and address on it. Anyone who comes across that letter will have your name, address and signature. Was this just plain stupid on the part of whoever put this together or was it an attempt to give those filling out absentee ballots pause in returning their ballot? How many people will simply not send in an absentee ballot because they don't want to sign the OUTSIDE of the envelope? Just for grins, I asked one of the people in our group what she would do if she received something that required her to sign the outside of the return envelope when her name and address were also on the outside of the envelope. She thought for a second and said, "I wouldn't return it." What I ended up doing was to take their envelope, sign it, then fold it and put it in my own envelope so that my signature and personal info were INSIDE the outermost envelope. Feel free to pass this email on if you know of someone who might be interested in my comments.
